The Yucca Elephantipes, also known as the house palm or palm lily, is a popular and robust houseplant with attractive, stiff, lance-shaped leaves that grow from a thick trunk. The following care tips apply to a healthy plant:
-
Light: Yuccas thrive in bright, indirect light and can also survive in low light conditions, but growth will slow. They tolerate sunlight, but avoid leaf burn.
-
Water: Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings; water when the top few centimeters feel dry. The yucca dislikes wet feet and can tolerate a period without watering better than overwatering. Less watering is recommended in winter.
-
Humidity: The Yucca tolerates dry air well; spraying is not necessary but helps to remove dust.
-
Temperature: Thrives at room temperatures; avoid drafts and temperatures below 10-12°C.
-
Soil: Use an airy, well-draining potting soil, preferably a cactus or succulent mix.
-
Feeding: Fertilize during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer; avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause root burn.
-
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves; long stems can be cut back, but the wound should be sealed to prevent infection.
-
Repotting: Repot every few years into a slightly larger pot with fresh soil, preferably in spring.
-
Pests: Check regularly for spider mites, aphids or scale insects and treat with biological agents if necessary.
-
Toxicity: The Yucca is poisonous to pets if ingested; keep out of reach.
