-
Origin and type: The Phalaenopsis, also known as the Butterfly Orchid or Moth Orchid, is one of the most popular and accessible orchids as a houseplant, originating from Southeast Asia.
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can burn the leaves; a spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
-
Water: Water about once every 7-10 days, depending on the temperature and humidity; check that the potting mix is dry before watering; avoid allowing the roots to sit in stagnant water to prevent root rot; water preferably in the morning with lukewarm water.
-
Humidity: Prefers higher humidity; occasional misting of leaves (but not flowers) is recommended, especially in dry indoor environments.
-
Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 18 and 25°C; avoid draughts and sudden temperature changes.
-
Feeding: During the growing season, give a special orchid fertilizer monthly; do not feed during dormant periods in winter.
-
Soil: Use special orchid soil that is light, airy and drains quickly, often based on tree bark.
-
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, preferably in spring; choose a slightly larger pot and fresh soil.
-
Flowering: After flowering, cut away the flower stem just above the second node (thickening); the plant may then flower again from the stem.
-
Bonus: The Phalaenopsis is relatively easy to care for, with a long flowering period and spectacular flowers; suitable for beginners and a beautiful decorative addition.
