Origin and type: The Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' is a compact version of the banana, a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and Africa. It is a large, aquatic plant that resembles a banana tree, with large, glossy green leaves.
-
Growth: The plant can grow up to 3 metres tall, but indoors it usually stays limited to about 1.5 to 2 metres with good care.
-
Leaves: Large, elongated leaves that evaporate water and contribute to a tropical atmosphere.
-
Light: Needs plenty of sunlight, at least five hours of direct sunlight per day, preferably in a sunny spot indoors.
-
Water: The plant needs plenty of water, especially in summer. Water as soon as the top of the potting soil feels dry, usually about 2-3 times a week in summer and once a week in winter. Make sure the roots don't stand in water.
-
Humidity: Prefers high humidity, especially in heated rooms in winter. Spray the leaves once or twice a week with lime-free water.
-
Temperature: Grows best at 18-26°C, not below 10°C.
-
Soil: Use a moisture-retentive, well-draining potting soil, such as a mix of potting soil and sand or perlite.
-
Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer) fertilize every 4 weeks with a liquid fertilizer for tropical plants.
-
Pruning: Remove dead leaves to keep the plant healthy.
-
Repotting: Repot into a larger pot every 1-2 years to prevent root formation.
-
Bonus: The Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' is an easy, fast-growing houseplant that brings a tropical feel to your home. With sufficient water and sunlight, it stays large, healthy, and beautifully green, and can even produce small bananas under optimal conditions.
