Origin and type: The bloodleaf (Iresine herbstii), also known as the beefsteak plant, is a tropical foliage plant from Brazil, belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. The name bloodleaf refers to the striking deep red to purple leaves with contrasting veins.
-
Growth: With proper care, it can grow to approximately 70 cm tall with full, colorful branches.
-
Light: Needs plenty of light, but not direct sunlight; bright indirect sun or morning/evening sun is ideal.
-
Water: Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but not wet; water about once a week, more frequently during warmer periods; if it dries out, the leaves will droop.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warmer indoor temperatures between 18-26°C; may not tolerate temperatures below 15°C.
-
Humidity: Likes higher humidity (50-80%); regular spraying encourages healthy growth and keeps the leaf color intense.
-
Soil: Well-drained, nutrient-rich potting soil with organic matter; coconut fiber and compost are beneficial.
-
Feeding: During the growth period (spring-summer) give liquid houseplant food every 2-4 weeks; give less or no food in winter.
-
Pruning: Regular pruning promotes full, compact growth; remove old and damaged leaves.
-
Repotting: Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring, preferably in a slightly larger pot with fresh potting soil.
-
Toxicity: Not edible, but not strongly toxic; keep out of reach of children.
-
Bonus: The Bloodleaf is an ideal plant for adding pops of color to unusual corners and combined with greenery; suitable for terrariums and bright living spaces.
