Origin and type: Cyclamen persicum is a popular flowering houseplant native to mountainous regions of the eastern Mediterranean. The plant grows from a tuber and is known for its striking flowers, which often grow with their centers downward.
-
Flowering period: Blooms mainly in autumn and winter, sometimes into spring.
-
Light: Prefers a bright location without direct sunlight, for example, near a window in a bright room. Direct sunlight or placing it on a radiator is not recommended.
-
Watering: Water from below by placing the pot in a saucer of water so the tuber can absorb the water. Keep the root ball slightly moist and avoid wet feet to prevent rot.
-
Temperature: Does best in cool temperatures between 15-20°C; dislikes large temperature fluctuations.
-
Humidity: Likes moderate to high humidity; regular misting is beneficial.
-
Feeding: During the flowering period, give special flowering food every two weeks; in summer, the plant is given a rest period with little to no water and nutrients.
-
Pruning: Remove wilted flowers and leaves regularly to make room for new growth.
-
Repotting: After the dormant period, repot in fresh, humus-rich potting soil, ensuring the tuber is just below the surface.
-
Bonus: Cyclamen has a cheerful appearance with many colors and flower shapes; ideal for bare windowsills in cool rooms.
