-
Origin and type: The Kentia Palm (Howea Forsteriana) is a beautiful tropical palm native to Lord Howe Island, Australia, loved as an elegant and easy houseplant.
-
Growth: Slow grower that can grow to about 3.5 metres indoors with lush, feathery leaves and a slender, straight trunk.
-
Leaves: Long, dark green, glossy leaves that hang in a graceful arch.
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; can also tolerate partial shade; direct sunlight may cause leaf burn.
-
Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry; in spring/summer about every 5 days, in autumn/winter every 10 days; do not give wet feet and ensure good drainage.
-
Humidity: Many palms prefer moderate to high humidity; regular misting can prevent brown edges.
-
Temperature: Ideally between 18-25°C; not below 12°C; avoid draughts and temperature fluctuations.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting soil, for example with the addition of perlite.
-
Feeding: Fertilize from early spring to late summer every 4-6 weeks with palm food or houseplant food; do not feed in autumn and winter.
-
Pruning: Remove old or damaged leaves; pruning encourages new, healthy growth.
-
Repotting: Kentia Palm grows slowly and repotting is best kept to a minimum; if necessary, repot in a slightly larger pot every 3-5 years in spring.
-
Toxicity: Non-toxic, safe for children and pets.
-
Extra: Highly air-purifying, tolerant of low light levels and relatively low-maintenance, making it an ideal palm for indoor areas with little direct sunlight.
