Origin and type: The String of Hearts, or Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii, is a succulent native to South Africa. It's known for its long tendrils with small, heart-shaped leaves in gray-green and white with a light purple underside.
-
Growth: Long, slender tendrils that hang stylishly; can reach several metres in length within an hour.
-
Leaves: Small heart-shaped leaves with a unique pattern; leaves are succulent and water-retaining.
-
Light: Prefers plenty of bright, indirect light; direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Ideally, it should be placed near an east- or west-facing window.
-
Water: Only water when two-thirds of the potting soil is dry; in winter, the soil can be completely dry. Overwatering leads to root rot.
-
Humidity: Prefers normal to slightly higher humidity; misting is possible, but not essential.
-
Temperature: Grows well at 15-24°C; not frost hardy.
-
Soil: Potting soil that drains well, for example cactus soil or normal potting soil with perlite.
-
Feeding: Fertilize lightly in spring and summer, about once a month with diluted plant food.
-
Pruning: Short tendrils and bare pieces can be cut off to encourage bushier growth; pruned pieces are suitable for propagation.
-
Repotting: Repot every 12 to 18 months in spring or summer into a slightly larger pot.
-
Toxicity: There are conflicting sources, but it is generally recommended to keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
-
Extra: The plant is ideal as a hanging plant because of its tendrils and forms a playful and sweet decorative element that requires little care.
