Origin and species: The lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus pulcher) is a tropical hanging plant native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. It grows as an epiphyte in the wild and is known for its striking, bright red flowers that resemble lipstick.
-
Growth: Can grow to about 60-90cm tall indoors with long, trailing tendrils full of dark green, glossy leaves.
-
Leaves: Oval-shaped, dark green, smooth and glossy, spread on long tendrils.
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn; an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
-
Water: Water when the top inch of potting soil feels dry; usually 1-2 times per week in spring and summer, less in winter; water enough so that excess water can drain out the drainage holes.
-
Humidity: Prefers higher humidity, but is fairly tolerant; regular misting promotes health and appearance.
-
Temperature: Ideal temperature is between 15 and 21°C; avoid draughts and cold places.
-
Soil: Use well-draining potting soil with an airy texture; a pot with drainage holes is essential.
-
Feeding: During the growing season, give a light houseplant food every 4-6 weeks; do not fertilize in winter.
-
Pruning: Cut back long or damaged tendrils to the desired size to encourage compact growth; pruned pieces are good for cuttings.
-
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years outside the flowering period in fresh potting soil.
-
Toxicity: Non-toxic, safe for children and pets.
-
Bonus: Ideal hanging plant for bright, humid spaces like bathrooms and kitchens; the flowers add a cheerful touch, and the plant contributes to a tropical atmosphere.
