Origin and type: The Palm Washingtonia Robusta, also known as the Mexican fan palm, is native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is a fast-growing, graceful palm with a slender, straight trunk and large, fan-shaped leaves.
-
Growth: Can grow up to 20 metres tall in the wild, as a houseplant it remains more compact but increases in size quite quickly.
-
Leaves: Deeply cut, fan-like leaves forming a lush crown; green in color.
-
Light: Likes plenty of direct sunlight, at least 5 hours a day; indoors, it's best to place it in a sunny, bright room; outdoors, acclimating it to the sun is recommended.
-
Water: Keep the soil slightly moist at all times, but avoid wet feet; water every 5-6 days in summer, every 10 days in winter; test the top layer of soil with your finger to ensure it is dry.
-
Humidity: Can tolerate dry air, but regular misting helps, especially in heated indoor areas.
-
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures of 18-30°C; tolerates light frost down to -4/-6°C in the ground, protection needed in severe frost.
-
Soil: Well-drained, light potting soil; in the garden, sandy or loamy soil with good drainage is preferred.
-
Feeding: Fertilize in spring and summer with palm food; avoid in autumn and winter. Avoid overfertilization.
-
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves regularly at the base; the trunk should not be pruned.
-
Repotting: Regular repotting is not necessary; if necessary, repot in a slightly larger pot in spring.
-
Propagation: Only by seed, cuttings do not work well.
-
Toxicity: Non-toxic, suitable for indoor and garden use.
-
Bonus: Popular in tropical and Mediterranean gardens, as well as a large houseplant; it gives an exotic look and is relatively low-maintenance.
