Growing pomegranates in your own garden? You can with Punica granatum! This unique shrub has been used as an ornamental for centuries and is beloved for its tasty and very healthy fruits. Punica granatum starts as a shrub and grows into a small tree with a rounded, dense crown. The branches are light brown, densely branched, and have sharp points (thorny twigs). The glossy green leaves turn a beautiful yellow-brown in autumn. Besides the delicious fruits, this shrub also has beautiful orange-red flowers. After flowering, the edible fruits appear: large, yellow-red pomegranates with numerous seeds in a sweet, juicy pulp, packed with vitamins and minerals.

Care
Punica granatum is not difficult to care for, but it needs a good, warm summer to ripen well in our climate. Due to its limited winter hardiness (down to about -8°C), the plant is best kept as a container plant on a patio, balcony, or courtyard in northwestern Europe. A pomegranate tree prefers fertile, moist, but well-drained soil in a sunny location. If the plant is in the ground, it is advisable to protect it from the cold during severe frost. The pomegranate plant can eventually reach a height of 200–300 cm.
