Origin and type: The Calathea lietzei 'White Fusion' is a tropical houseplant from the Marantaceae family, originally from the rainforests of South America and known for its striking variegated leaf pattern.
-
Growth: Compact habit, reaches approximately 40–60 cm tall; slow growing with dense, widely spreading leaves.
-
Leaves: Oval, with unique patterns in white, light green, and dark green; undersides purplish-pink; leaves close at night and open in daylight.
-
Light: Prefers plenty of indirect light; direct sunlight causes leaf scorch. Can also be placed in partial shade, as long as there is sufficient daylight.
-
Water: Keep the soil slightly moist at all times; water in small amounts regularly. Preferably use water with a low-lime content at room temperature. Too much or too little water will cause limp or curling leaves.
-
Humidity: Requires high humidity of 70–90%; spraying daily, placing near a humidifier, or on a saucer with pebbles and water will prevent brown leaf edges.
-
Temperature: Ideally between 18–25°C; avoid draughts, cold and sudden temperature changes.
-
Soil: Airy, well-draining potting soil, such as potting soil mixed with perlite or coconut fiber; use a pot with drainage holes.
-
Feeding: Feed foliage plant food every 4 weeks during the growth period (spring to autumn); do not feed in winter.
-
Pruning: Remove dead or brown leaves regularly to encourage new growth.
-
Propagation: Can be propagated by division of the rhizome when repotting in spring.
-
Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and animals.
-
Bonus: Known as the 'drama queen' among houseplants due to its sensitivity to environmental changes, it rewards proper care with beautifully vibrant leaves and an elegant appearance.
