Origin and type: The Euphorbia ingens, also known as "Cowboy Cactus" or Candelabra Tree, is a succulent plant native to South Africa. Despite its cactus-like appearance, it belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae).
-
Growth: Can grow up to 10 meters tall in the wild, but as a houseplant it usually stays within 1-2 meters. It forms thick, columnar stems with candelabra-like branches.
-
Leaves: Small leaves appear temporarily at the tips of the stems, but fall off as the plant ages.
-
Light: Loves plenty of direct sunlight; needs at least 6 hours of sun per day. Place it in a warm, sunny spot, preferably facing south.
-
Water: Only water when the soil is completely dry; it's better to underwater than overwater. In winter, it can easily go without water for 1-2 months. Soil that is too wet can lead to root rot.
-
Humidity: Tolerates dry air well; spraying is not necessary.
-
Temperature: Thrives best between 18 and 30°C; not frost-hardy, so always keep indoors or at temperatures above 10°C.
-
Soil: Use well-draining cactus or succulent potting soil; add some sand or perlite to make it more aerated, if desired.
-
Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with cactus food; do not feed in autumn and winter.
-
Pruning: Pruning is not recommended because wounds heal poorly and are prone to infection. Only remove damaged or dead parts with gloves.
-
Propagation: Propagation is possible via cuttings or seeds. Let cuttings dry for a few days before replanting. Wear gloves because of the toxic sap.
-
Toxicity: The milky sap (spurge) is poisonous and can cause skin and eye irritation. Keep the plant away from children and pets.
-
Bonus: This robust plant is ideal for those who want minimal care, thanks to its drought tolerance and sculptural shape. It adds a rugged, desert-like look to any interior.
