-
Origin and type: Tropical bonsai from Southeast Asia, known as “Fukien Tea”, or “Oriental Tea Tree”, belongs to the Boraginaceae family.
-
Growth: Slow grower, grows to about 60-80 cm tall; compact woody shrub with dense foliage.
-
Leaves: Glossy, dark green, small, leathery, and waxy; grow in clusters that clearly show the flower and branch structure.
-
Light: Needs plenty of bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn; can be placed in a bright room.
-
Water: Keep the soil slightly moist; water when the top layer feels dry; never allow prolonged wet soil to prevent root rot.
-
Humidity: Likes high humidity; daily spraying or placing on a tray with wet stones promotes well-being, especially in heated rooms.
-
Temperature: Ideal temperature around 20 °C; not below 15 °C; the bonsai is sensitive to cold and draught.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive bonsai soil, such as a mix of Akadama and pumice.
-
Feeding: During the growth period, feed every 4 weeks with liquid bonsai food; less in winter.
-
Pruning and training: Prune annually to maintain a compact shape; young shoots are easy to cut and wire; use sharp, clean tools.
-
Propagation: Propagation by cuttings or sowing; cuttings root easily in moist soil.
-
Toxicity: May release sap which causes skin irritation; keep out of reach of children and pets.
-
Bonus: Well-known bonsai for its beautiful white flowers that can bloom all year round and its graceful, compact growth; ideal for an office or living space.
