-
Origin and type: Tropical tree, also known as Chinese Banyan or Curtain Fig; popular as a bonsai and houseplant.
-
Growth: Fast grower with dense foliage; can be kept indoors as a bonsai with regular pruning and wiring; roots can form aerial roots.
-
Leaves: Glossy, dark green, oval in shape; thick, waxy leaves that retain moisture.
-
Light: Needs plenty of light, preferably direct sunlight; can tolerate low light conditions but will grow less well in those conditions.
-
Water: Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings; do not allow the soil to dry out completely. Water well and allow excess water to drain to prevent root rot.
-
Humidity: Likes high humidity; daily misting or placing on a tray with damp stones is recommended.
-
Temperature: Ideal temperature is 15-25°C; not winter hardy, keep frost-free.
-
Soil: Well-drained, light potting soil; suitable for bonsai and houseplant use.
-
Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 2-4 weeks with liquid fertilizer.
-
Pruning and training: Prunes well for shape and compactness; foliage can be reduced by completely defoliating every few years; pruning sap is sticky and can irritate the skin.
-
Propagation: Simple via cuttings; cuttings in water or moist soil root quickly.
-
Toxicity: Sap may cause skin irritation; keep out of reach of children and pets.
-
Extra: Popular because of the combination of ornamental value, fast growth and the possibility of bonsai cultivation.
